Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off the season following the Christmas holidays by dropping their first game 4 - 0 to the Winnipeg ICE.
Connor McClennon got the first goal of the game when he broke in behind the Wheat Kings all alone on a feed from Peyton Krebs and fooled goaltender Jiri Patera via five hole midway through the first period.
Krebs' next appearance on the score sheet would come in the goal column when he got this third of the season by beating Patera in the third period to put the ICE up two. Krebs would add another assist later in the game for a three-point night, garnering him a first star on the evening.
Isaac Johnson scored the third and fourth goals of the game late in the third period earning him the third star of the game while Liam Hughes stopped all 28 shots he saw for the ICE earning him the second star of the game.
This was the first loss in regulation for the Wheat Kings in the month of December after a couple tough shootout losses, and clawing their way back to a .500 record before the Christmas break.
This was also the first of two games the ICE and Wheat Kings will play against each other this weekend, heading east on the Trans-Canada Highway to face off tomorrow night in Winnipeg at Wayne Fleming Arena. This evening's result leaves the season series at 4-3 in favor of Brandon so far, with the two teams meeting twice more after Saturday's game in Winnipeg.
Following Saturday night's game in Winnipeg, the Wheat Kings will return home to host the Regina Pats on Monday night in a 7pm start at Westoba Place.
Brandon will then close out 2019 with a New Year's Eve game in Moose Jaw the following day.
The Wheat Kings first game of 2020 will come up one week from tonight when they play host to the defending champion Prince Albert Raiders.
Tickets to both of next week's games, which includes Friday's Home Depot Family Skate, go back on sale Saturday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
