Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

HUNTSVILLE, AL (December 28, 2011) - The Knoxville Ice Bears nine game winning streak has ended with a 5-3 loss to the Huntsville Havoc. A 12 minute, four goal onslaught by the Havoc was too much for the Ice Bears to overcome.

Knoxville's Dan Bremner, who has been on a goal scoring terror in the last five games, notched the first tally of the evening when he batted in the puck after a flurry of shots on Huntsville's goaltender Kevin Beech for a 1-0 lead. The Havoc had had a few great opportunities to pull even but the Ice Bears' netminder Jesse Kallechy was equal to the task.

Huntsville hit the ice in the second period a renewed vigor and was swarming in the Ice Bears zone forcing Kyle VanDermale to take a penalty at 3:26 of the period. The Havoc seized their opportunity scoring just 30 seconds in on their man advantage with a goal by Brandon Richardson to tie the game at 1. The Havoc would then proceed to score three more unanswered goals to jump out to a 4-1 lead by 14:28 of the second period.

Kevin Swider cut the lead in half at 16:37 on a dazzling individual effort. He beat the Havoc defender to the outside and drove the net and managed to stuff the puck past Beech while being tripped on the way to the goal. Three minutes later, Huntsville scored their fifth and final goal of the evening.

With the seconds winding down in the second, the fireworks erupted with two fights and all-out display of aggression by Havoc penalty minutes leader Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon on an unwilling Ricky Helmbrecht. Boutin-Gagnon's shenanigans gave the Ice Bears a five minute power-play to start the third period.

Knoxville managed one goal on their five minute power-play on a rocket shot from the point by Emery Olauson for his 20th goal of the season. The play was set up by Swider and Mark Van Vliet. The Ice Bears continued to press for the remainder of the period but were unable to draw even and force overtime.

The Ice Bears return to the Knoxville Civic Coliseum Thursday, December 29 to host the August RiverHawks. Thursday's game is part of the $1000 Thursdays where the Ice Bears will be giving away a $500 prize to two lucky fans. For tickets call 865-656-4444.
