Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

KNOXVILLE, TN (December 29, 2011) - The Knoxville Ice Bears rebounded from their only loss in the month of December with a 5-1 victory over the Augusta RiverHawks to move into first place of the SPHL.

Augusta took early advantage of weary road legs early as Neil Graham scored at 7:38 of the first period to put the RiverHawks up 1-0. The lead lasted until Knoxville took advantage of a 5 on 3. Emery Olauson ripped a shot past Augusta's goaltender Peter Skoggard for his 21st of the season. Olauson only trails RiverHawks forward Jim Gehring who leads the SPHL with 24 goals.

The Knoxville goal released one man from the box but the Ice Bears were still on the power play. With the man advantage, the Ice Bears struck again to take their first lead of the game. Dan Bremner continued his goal scoring dominance by notching his seventh goal in five games. Knoxville returned to the locker room leading 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Fan favorite David Segal increased Knoxville's lead at 6:07 of the second period when he picked up the puck from Kyle VanderMale and beat Skoggard to push the lead to 3-1. Tyler Fletcher dropped the gloves with Augusta's Jason Price after a stick infraction in the corner of the Ice Bears zone erupted into fisticuffs. The second period ended with a 3-1 Ice Bears lead.

The floodgates opened in the third period as Kevin Swider notched two goals at :50 seconds and 9:39 of the period to finish off the scoring and seal an Ice Bears 5-1 victory.

Bryan Hince, the SPHL goaltending leader in wins, turned aside 28 of 29 RiverHawks shots to cement his 16th victory of the season. Hince leads second place by 9 wins to second place Steve Christie of Pensacola.

Tonight's victory propelled the Ice Bears into sole possession of first place and are still undefeated at home with 12 wins.

The next home game is Thursday, Jan. 05, as the Ice Bears host the Mississippi Surge and will mark the Surge's only visit to Rocky Top this season.
