This Weeks Notes and News
Our Knoxville skaters have enjoyed being ahead of the pack for so long, they might forget what the rest of the league looks like. With a dominant nine-point lead as of this writing, the Ice Bears have garnered 67 points overall and have prime positioning in the potential seedings for the playoffs. With the end of the season drawing near, each game holds significance, and it's good that the Ice Bears are in the driver's seat of the Zamboni.
Last week's games showed the usual Knoxville mettle as our boys skated through the competition and continued to pick up valuable points.
On Friday the Ice Bears took home ice and walloped Fayetteville by a 6-3 score. On Saturday, the team lost in a shootout to Richmond 5-4 but the extra point awarded for the struggle help pad an already considerable lead in the standings.
Friday's game was a wide swing of emotions for the fans. Fayetteville jumped out to a 2-0 lead as the first period ended, but the Ice Bears responded when Mike Carter drove the puck home as fans were barely seated for the second period. The Fire Antz had barely time to try to respond to the first score when Justin Keller tied it up 2-2. Then JJ Wrobel got into the act not even three minutes later by slamming home his seventh goal of the season. Chris Rebernik joined in on the free-for-all by popping in the team's fourth goal 9:35 into the period. Fayetteville's Rob Sich took advantage of the power play as he added a goal for Fayetteville but, shall we say, the party seemed to be over for the Fire Antz.
The third period was all Knoxville once again as Kevin Swider to a pass from Tim Vitek and lit up the red light for a 5 on 3 Ice Bear advantage. Mike Carter closed out the scoring as he added his 21st goal of the season, sealing a 6-3 Ice Bears win. All three stars went to Knoxville, with Cater getting the first star, Rebber nabbing the second star and Keller receiving the third star.
Saturday's game against Richmond was a mirror of the previous night's contest, but this time Knoxville was on the losing end of the situation. The Ice Bears leaped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Derek Pallardy and Chris Rebernik (his 14th of the season) but the scoring combo of Trevor Karasiewicz and Geoff Rollins couldn't be stopped as the Renegades fought to a 4-4 tie at the end of regualtion time. Tim Vitek and B.J. Pelkey kept the game close, but Richmond's Ryan Busby netted the shootout goal for their SO win.
Knoxville heads into games against Columbus (home on Thursday) and Twin City (away on Friday). Our gang seems to be in good spirits and good shape as we head into the final weeks of Februrary and look toward the run to the Cup. As we keep adding points each game, we'll be in a comfortable position when the post season begins.
