Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - One down, one to go. The Ice Bears finished off the Cape Fear FireAntz last night in Fayetteville, North Carolina by a score of 4-3 and will advance to the Championship series against regular season champions, the Huntsville Channel Cats.
Cape Fear, although short a couple players, gave the Bears a good fight last night, but for them the game was 1:37 too long. With 1:36 left in the third period, Kevin Swider shot the puck past FireAntz goalie Glenn Ridler and put the Ice Bears ahead by one. Defenseman Ali MacEachern was the first to score for the Ice Bears (first period) followed by Craig Desjarlais (second period) and Alex Alepin (third period).
The Ice Bears will now take on the first place Channel Cats beginning April 1. The first two games (Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 2) will be played in Huntsville, and then the Ice Bears will return home to the Civic Coliseum to play game three on Sunday, April 4 at 5:00 p.m. and game four on Monday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. if necessary.
The Ice Bears are only the second Knoxville professional hockey team to ever compete in the finals for championship rings. The 2002-03 Ice Bears lost to the Orlando Seals in the finals of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League championship series.
The following are the highlights of finals week:
Ice Bears practice this week: Tuesday 10-11AM, Wednesday 10-11AM, Thursday 9-10AM at Civic Coliseum. Interviews are available with players and coach.
Sunday, April 4 is "Whiteout Night." Fans who wear white to the game will get $1 off at Box Office and the first 1,000 fans will receive an Ice Bears "Playoff Rally Towel."
Ice Bears will be hosting a "Playoff Pep Rally" starting at 3PM outside in the plaza of the Civic Coliseum before Sunday's game.
