Carr Named SEHL Rookie of the Year

March 29, 2004 - South East Hockey League (SEHL) - Huntsville Channel Cats News Release

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The South East Hockey League announced today that Huntsville Channel Cats forward, Allan Carr, has been named the league’s Rookie of the Year. The Merlin, Ontario native was chosen by a vote of the league’s head coaches, team front office personnel, and media representatives from each of the four league cities.

“He was a diamond in the rough,” Channel Cats head coach, John Gibson, said. “We knew he was packed full of skill, but I think he surprised everybody with the level he played at this season. We couldn’t have asked for more from him.”

The twenty-six year-old native of Merlin, Ontario compiled an impressive list of statistics in his first professional season. Carr joined the Channel Cats this year following two years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and parts of two years playing junior hockey in the OHL. Allan Carr led the SEHL in goals scored (56), game winning goals (12), and plus / minus with an impressive +35 rating. He was second in the league in scoring (111 points) and assists (55). Carr was also tied for most power play goals with Knoxville’s K. J. Voorhees (20) and tied for most short handed goals with Knoxville’s Todd MacIsaac (4). He also led the South East Hockey League in shooting percentage at 22.5% (56 goals on 249 shots).

“The award means a lot because it reflects on how well the team did,” Carr said. “We worked hard all season and that was obvious in the success that we had. I exceeded my expectations. Coming in I was hoping to just average one point per game but after getting here and meshing so well with the guys it just took off.”

Carr joins James Patterson and Coach Gibson in receiving post-season awards from the league. Gibson was named SEHL Coach of the Year last Wednesday while Patterson was named Most Valuable Player on Thursday.
