Ice Bears Sign Two for Playoff Push
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Ice Bears signed two players this morning as they get ready to battle it out with Cape Fear for second place in the South East Hockey League. Kevin Swider, who played two games with the Ice Bears on March 5 & 6, signed his contract and will become a permanent part of the team.
Forward Kevin Swider (5'10", 162 lbs), or "Swiderman" as he was referred to by teammates and fans last year, had 40 points and 40 assists last season as the Ice Bears' leading scorer. Swider, who began this season with the Miami Manatees of the World Hockey Association 2, was the Manatee's second and the league's fourth leading scorer with 18 goals and 43 assists for 61 points in 41 games. The Livonia, Michigan native played his first professional season in 2001-02 when he split time between the Rockford Icehogs and the Asheville Smoke, both of the United Hockey League.
Also signing his contract this morning was defenseman Mike Zeibaq (6'1", 210 lbs) of the Lubbock Cotton Kings (Central Hockey League). With the Cotton Kings, he had 3 goals and 5 assists for 8 points in 23 games. He began the 2003 season with the Indianapolis Ice where he played 38 games and tallied 4 goals and 1 assist for 5 points. On the season, he has 141 penalty minutes (58 with the Ice and 83 with the Cotton Kings). The Long Island, NY native played four years at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Zeibaq is taking the place of rookie defenseman Ryan Hughes who was waived this morning. Hughes, who has 39 penalty minutes, has tallied 5 goals and 17 assists for 22 points in 49 games. Swider will be replacing forward Jeff Hansen (1 goal, 6 assists for 7 points in 54 games and 170 penalty minutes) who has been called up to the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League.
In other league news, Cape Fear waived team captain Aaron Shrieves (9 goals, 9 assists for 18 points in 43 games and 318 penalty minutes), placed Matt Shannon (4 goals, 10 assists for 14 points in 50 games and 142 penalty minutes) on season-ending IR and suspended Ryan Kiley (19 goals, 9 assists for 28 points in 19 games and 84 penalty minutes).
