The Rayz improved to 12 points with a 5-11-2 record and moved within five points of second place Rio Grande Valley. The Rayz capped off a tremendous weekend where they went 2-0-1, in three games against division opponents. The Rayz will remain home to continue their five-game homestand on Wednesday morning for the 4th Annual Cool School Day Game, presented by the American Bank Center, SMG and the City of Corpus Christi. The Rayz will host the Arizona Sundogs in front of thousands of local school students. Come have an early lunch at the American Bank Center this Wednesday at 11:05am. Tickets are on sale now. Austin struck first when Kurtis Kisio scored his third goal of the season at 8:15. The Rayz quickly responded on a power play when Brent Howarth scored his team-leading 9th goal at 9:42. Howarth banged home a puck in the crease that had trickled through Miguel Beaudry on a shot from the left point. Joe Blaznek and Justin Quenneville got the assists. The teams closed the first period tied 1-1 after the Rayz outshot the Bats 12-7 in the opening frame.
The teams played a scoreless second period, but went to the locker room with 29.4 seconds remaining after a glass problem at the American Bank Center caused a lengthy delay. The Bats outshot the Rayz 9-8 in the period and the teams headed the third period tied 1-1.
After a scoreless third period, the Rayz and Bats went to a shootout where Jason Tapp and Beaudry stole the show. Tapp stopped three of four shooters, but Beaudry stopped all five he faced and led the Bats to the win. John Ronan scored the only goal of the shootout for the game winner.
Tapp made 27 saves on 29 shots and took the OT loss, falling to 5-9-2. Beaudry was terrific and improved to 3-7 with the win, turning aside 33 of 34 shots. The Rayz went 1-5 on the power play and the Bats were 0-3. The Rayz outshot the Bats 34-30.
