Iowa Cubs News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Iowa Cubs (47-35) scored seven in the third inning on their way to a 12-2 victory over the San Antonio Missions (50-32), Saturday at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium.
A Jim Adduci solo homer in the first inning set the tone for the game as Iowa tied a season best with 15 hits and got at least one hit from each of the starting nine.
The floodgates opened in the third as the first eight I-Cubs of the frame reached to force starter Johan Belisario (L, 0-1) from the game in his Triple-A debut. The I-Cubs sent 11 batters to the plate and knocked eight hits in the frame as Phillip Evans, Taylor Davis, Trent Giambrone and Trevor Clifton collected RBI.
San Antonio foiled the shutout on a Jake Hager home run in the bottom of the third, but Iowa didn't slow. The I-Cubs put up another big inning with a four-run fifth to move to a 12-1 edge. Giambrone contributed a two-run blast to bring his season total to 18, before Mark Zagunis batted in a pair with a double.
The Missions would add a run in the sixth on a Lucas Erceg RBI single, but Iowa pitching otherwise shut down the home team. Clifton (W, 3-7) allowed one earned run through 5.0 innings and came away with the win. The righty gave up four hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Junichi Tazawa gave up a run in the sixth before Randy Rosario spun a scoreless two frames and Tim Collins closed the action with a shutout ninth.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Iowa's 12 runs marked its most since a 13-4 victory against Albuquerque on June 10.
