Iowa Cubs News Release
New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs (43-47) beat the Iowa Cubs (41-49) 4-2 at Zephyr Field tonight, extending the Cubs' losing streak to six games. This is the Cubs' longest losing streak of the season and the longest since a six-game skid August 31-September 5, 2009. The Zephyrs lead this series 3-0 and lead the season series 7-4.
The Cubs scored first in the top of the third inning. Scott Moore led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Marwin Gonzalez. Gonzalez advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Coleman. After a groundout, Tyler Colvin singled to center field. Moore scored, but Tim Torres' throw to the plate was in time to get Gonzalez for the final out of the inning.
The Zephyrs took the lead in the fourth. Torres drew a leadoff walk and Joe Thurston singled. After a flyout, Mike Cervenak lined a three-run homer just inside the left field foul pole off Coleman to give the Zephyrs a 3-1 lead.
The Cubs got back within one with a run in the fifth. Moore led off with another double and scored two batters later on a groundout by Coleman. The Zephyrs got their final run on a solo homer by Vinny Rottino in the sixth. Rottino has hit safely in 11 straight games overall and all 11 games in the season series against the Cubs.
Zephyrs' starter Chris Sampson (6-0) worked seven innings to pick up the win. The Cubs had two men reach in the top of the ninth, but Jose Ceda got out of the jam to earn his league-leading 20th save of the season. Coleman (2-2) worked six innings in the loss. John Gaub walked four and struck out two in two scoreless innings in relief for the Cubs.
The Cubs and Zephyrs wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. RH Alberto Cabrera (1-2, 7.88) will start for the Cubs against RH Adalberto Mendez (1-6, 7.50) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 12:40 p.m.
