I-Cubs Blanked 4-0 in New Orleans

New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs (42-47) shut out the Iowa Cubs (41-48) 4-0 at Zephyr Field tonight. The Cubs were blanked for the first time since May 2 and the fourth time overall this year. The team has now lost a season-high five straight games. The Zephyrs lead this series 2-0 and lead the season series 6-4.

Zephyrs' starter Sean West (3-5) worked the first six innings and earned the win. He allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out three. Corey Madden struck out five in two innings of relief and Pete Andrelczyk finished the game with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.

Cubs' starter Jay Jackson (4-8) allowed two runs in six innings for his fourth quality start of the season, but got the loss. He walked Tim Torres to leadoff the bottom of the first inning and Vinny Rottino doubled to drive him in for the Zephyrs first run. New Orleans added their second run in the fifth. Torres drew his second walk and scored on a single by Mike Cervenak. Jackson struck out the final two batters he faced in the sixth inning to finish with a season-high eight strikeouts in the game.

Marco Carrillo finished the final two innings and surrendered a two-run homer to Cervenak in the seventh inning to complete the scoring. Torres was on base for the homer after a bunt single to start the inning. Torres was on base four times, including a double in the third, and scored three of the Zephyrs' four runs in the game.

The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 6:00. The Cubs haven't announced a starter that will counter RH Chris Sampson (5-0, 2.53) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:40 p.m.
