Huskies Score Late to Defeat Honkers

(Rochester, MN) - The Duluth Huskies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 3-2 win over the Rochester Honkers on Thursday July 11 at Wade Stadium in Duluth, MN.

Kyle Teaf drew a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the first inning for the Huskies. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Christoph Bono and scored on a RBI single from Keith Curcio to take the early 1-0 lead.

Tyler Baker (Wichita State) and Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) drew back-to-back walks to start the top of the second inning and Reid Roper (Illinois) followed with a single to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Baker scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Halloran (Minnesota) to tie the score at 1-1.

Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) started the top of the third inning by reaching on a walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Max Murphy (Bradley) and scored on a two-out single from Baker to give Rochester a 2-1 lead.

Michael Suiter reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh inning to put the tying runner on base for Duluth. Justin Hazard and Teaf each picked up RBI infield singles in the inning to reclaim the lead at 3-2 after seven innings.

Dan Schmidt earned the win (1-0) for the Huskies as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) took the loss (2-2) for the Honkers. He allowed three runs, just one earned, on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Roper pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Honkers. Duluth starter TJ Nowak allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, while Nate Carter picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Baker and Halloran led the Honkers offense, as they each collected a hit and a RBI on the night.

Rochester (0-8, 18-25) returns home to host the Willmar Stingers on Friday July 12 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is scheduled to make the start for the Honkers. Friday is jersey night, presented by Wells Fargo, so the first 500 fans in attendance will receive free jerseys. The game is the first of a two-game series before the Honkers return to Duluth for a two-game series beginning on Sunday July, 14.
