Blue Anchors Fall to MoonDogs 3-1 to End Homestand

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors dropped their fifth-straight game in a 3-1 loss to the Mankato MoonDogs Wednesday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The Anchors now have a record of 1-5 in the second half and an overall record of 11-29.

Alexandria jumped ahead in the second against MoonDog starter Kahana Neal. Ryan Blanchard reached on a throwing error by Alex Polston and Aaron Gretz and Andrew Mulato walked to load the bases. On a 1-1 count, Keegan Dale hit a sacrifice fly to give the Anchors a 1-0 lead.

The MoonDogs finally got to Spencer Koopmans in the top of the fifth. Woody Woodward was hit by a pitch and stole second base. A one-out double by Alex Polston knotted the score at one one. Polston stole third and was brought home on a double by Hibraim Cordova giving Mankato a 2-1 advantage.

In the top of the eighth against reliever Brandon Johnson, the MoonDogs extended their lead. Timothy Arakawa singled and stole second base before Josh Fuentes singled on a line drive into right-center making the score 3-1.

Koopmans (1-1) takes his first loss of the season going five innings allowing two runs on five hits, a walk and six punch outs. Tyler Beck threw a scoreless sixth giving up a base hit and striking out one. In 1.1 innings, Johnson gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Simpson pitched 1/3 of an inning walking two, one intentional, and had a strikeout. Finishing the game for Alexandria was Jose Cardona

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Spencer Koopmans (SP) - Despite taking the loss, Koopmans turned in a good start. After having just one strikeout in his past two starts combined, he baffled the MoonDog batters by striking out six. His ERA is now lowered to 3.68 this summer.

Notes: Six strikeouts for Koopmans ties a season high...In all four of his starts, Koopmans has gone at least five innings..Kris Goodman extended his hitting streak to seven games...With one walk in the game, Mulato leads the squad with 20 this season...Dale's RBI was his first since June 30th in Thunder Bay...The Blue Anchors hit the road for a five-game road trip with one in Mankato, three in Waterloo and wrapping up with one in Mankato again...RHP Hunter Newman (0-2, 12.60) is on the mound Thursday...The game, starting at 7:05 p.m., can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.com.
