Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Carolina Hurricanes today announced that they have recalled defenseman Danny Biega from Charlotte. Additionally, the Charlotte Checkers announced that they have taken action on their two remaining training camp invites by signing forward David Wohlberg to a professional tryout contract and releasing forward Ryan Rashid.
Charlotte's roster now stands at 23 players as the club prepares to begin its sixth American Hockey League season in Iowa at 8 p.m. Saturday. An updated roster is attached to this release.
Biega, 24, earns his second career recall to Carolina after making his NHL debut with the club last season. In 10 games with the Hurricanes, the 6-foot, 200-pound native of Montreal, Quebec, recorded two assists. The third-year pro and third-round draft pick by Carolina in 2010 (67th overall) has posted 32 points (5g, 27a) to go along with 111 penalty minutes in 135 career AHL games with Charlotte.
Wohlberg, a 25-year-old native of South Lyon, MI, joins the Checkers after spending the entirety of his first three professional seasons with the AHL's Albany Devils. Since turning pro following a four-year career at the University of Michigan, Wohlberg, (6-foot-1, 192 pounds) has recorded 34 points (15g, 19a) and 85 penalty minutes in 153 games. The New Jersey Devils drafted Wohlberg in the sixth round (172nd overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Saturday's game and Sunday's rematch in Iowa are the first of 10 consecutive road games the Checkers will play to begin their season. The team will return home next week before departing on an eight-game trip that will lead to the historic home opener at Bojangles' Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 7.
