Lethbridge, AB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings came up short Tuesday night in Lethbridge as they opened up a 7-game Western Hockey League road trip against the Hurricanes.

Two powerplay goals were enough as Lethbridge edged the Wheat Kings 2-1.

With the loss, the Wheat Kings slipped to 6-2-2-1 on the season.

After trading goals in the first, Lethbridge scored what turned out to be the game winner in the second when Taylor Ross converted a rebound past Wheat Kings' netminder Jiri Patera.

Trailing after two periods, the Wheat Kings pushed hard for the equalizer in the third but rookie netminder Carl Tetachuk, who was making his first WHL start, was brilliant making a number of key stops as Brandon outshot the hosts 16-3 in the final frame.

Captain Stelio Mattheos scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who went 1-4 with the man advantage.

"It's disappointing when you do a lot of things well, especially in the third period in a one-goal game, and you're not rewarded for it," Wheat Kings' head coach David Anning told the Brandon Sun following the game. "I think if you look at the (third) period as a whole, we did a lot of things the right way. I thought we had a lot of scoring chances. We certainly need to bury those opportunities. We missed the net a few times and those are costly misses.

"There were a lot of positives to build off of and it's disappointing we didn't get rewarded," he added.

Jadon Joseph rounded out the scoring for the 'Canes, who improved to 6-4-1-2.

The Wheat Kings will be looking for a bounce back Wednesday night when they travel to Cranbrook to meet the Kootenay Ice.
