Humberto Arteaga Named to Carolina League All-StarTeam, Jamie Quirk Manager

June 8, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced their All-Star team on Wednesday and Humberto Arteaga was among those selected for the honor. He will be the lone player representing the Wilmington Blue Rocks while the man at the helm of the Rocks all season long, Manager Jamie Quirk, was also named manager for the Carolina League squad.

Arteaga is in his second year with the club and despite a slow start to the 2016 season, he is hotter than any member of the Blue Crew as of late. The shortstop was batting .188 as recently as May 12, but since then he has been on a tremendous tear and propelled the average to .279, "I have my confidence back. It was a big problem for me in the first month," claimed Arteaga, "I was kind of lost at the plate. But now I'm seeing the ball better and hitting it better as a result. I'm really glad to go up there and know what I'm capable of and then getting it done now."

And how he has been getting it done is not just a flash in the pan. He has hits in 20 of his last 23 games and over that stretch is batting .391 (36-for-92) with six extra base knocks, 11 RBI, and 11 runs scored. Not surprisingly, the hits are coming in bunches as the native of Venezuela has produced multiple hits in seven of his last 13 affairs. Those early season struggles were tough to overcome, but now he is an All-Star, "it was hard when I was struggling honestly, yeah, I was losing focus sometimes, especially on the preparation right before the game," admitted the shortstop. "We talked about that and I've learned that in preparation right before the game, I've got to be in beast mode and I have been and the results speak for themselves."

While Arteaga, who stands at 6-0, 180 pounds, will never be mistaken for Marshawn Lynch, his production lately is just as noticeable. Even when he is not getting hits, he is putting the ball in play with a purpose. Although he went just 1-for-4 in his most recent game on Monday against the Winston-Salem Dash, it could have been more base knocks if not for getting robbed of hits on three separate occasions.

The man who will compile the All-Star starting lineup and manage the substitutions will be a familiar face for Atreaga, his own manager. Quirk is in his first year with the Blue Crew and in his first year in the Carolina League, despite that he has been tabbed to man the Carolina squad when they take on their California counterparts. The game will be played at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.
