Huge Start Fades, Barnstormers Fall

August 10, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

For the second consecutive night, the Lancaster Barnstormers struck for five runs in the first inning.

However, on Friday evening at New Britain Stadium, the early lead came crashing down as the New Britain Bees scored eight unanswered runs, including six in the sixth inning, to rally for an 8-5 victory in the opener of a three-game series.

With the loss, Lancaster's lead in the wild card race was trimmed back to four games.

Darian Sandford got the Barnstormers underway with a bloop single into right and stole second. Josh Bell walked, and Blake Gailen gave Lancaster a quick lead with a double deep to right scoring one. Mark Hamburger (7-8) got the first out on strikes, but Jimmy Paredes delivered a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. K.C. Hobson singled to right to score Gailen, and Trayvon Robinson slammed a long two-run homer to right center for the 5-0 edge.

The Barnstormers managed only three singles for the remainder of the night and put only one more man in scoring position.

Even with the offensive struggles, it appeared that Brooks Hall would hold the lead. The right-hander gave up one run on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Jovan Rosa in the fourth, but kept the lead at 5-1 into the bottom of the sixth.

There, he got the first two outs before walking Jason Rogers and Matt Tuiasosopo in succession. Rosa got to him for a two-run double to right center, and Jonathan Galvez cut the lead to 5-4 with a double to left center.

Huascar Brazoban (1-2) took over and could not get the final out. Vinny Siena drilled a single past a do-or-die try by Paredes at third as the tying run scored. Vince Conde walked, and a balk moved both runners into scoring position. Darren Ford doubled, capping the six-run inning for a 7-5 lead.

For good measure, Rosa singled home an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.

Three New Britain relievers - Chris Reed, Adam Loewen and Evan Scribner - combined to strike out six over the final three innings. Scribner retired his 18th save.

The series continues on Saturday. Jonathan Albaladejo (7-6) gets the start for the Barnstormers against right-hander Devin Burke (2-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 6:15.

NOTES: Gailen has 17 RBI in the last 18 games...Sandford's steal was his 57th...Hall walked more than two batters for only the second time in 16 "starts"...Sandford is 20-for-53 (.377) in the last 15 games...Matt Marksberry allowed a run for the first time in 16 appearances, dating back to June 19.
