New Britain Bees News Release

(New Britain, CT) - The New Britain Bees (15-14, 48-44) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (13-14, 51-39) 8-5 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game weekend series in the Hardware City. The Bees were victorious over the Barnstormers for the first time in four tries in the Nutmeg State on the 2018 campaign while improving to 8-5 overall against their Freedom Division foe.

New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger (7-8) picked up the win after allowing five runs on five hits (one home run) in six innings pitched, walking and striking out four while hitting a batter. Lancaster starting pitcher Brooks Hall registered a no-decision, giving up five runs on four hits across five and two-thirds innings of work, walking four and striking out three. Evan Scribner fired a scoreless inning of relief in the top half of the ninth frame for his team-best 18th save of the season.

Lancaster sent eight batters to the plate in the top half of the first inning versus Hamburger, scoring five runs on four hits to open up an immediate 4-0 lead, with the big blow coming off the bat of Trayvon Robinson, a two-out, two-run home run to right centerfield for the final two runs put up during the big rally. New Britain cut the deficit to 5-1 in the home half of the third by way of a sacrifice fly produced by Jovan Rosa, plating James Skelton after he led off with a single and a stolen base. The Bees had ten men come to bat in the bottom of the sixth, putting up six runs on four hits to take their first lead of the night 7-5, all coming with two-men down and the bases empty. Following back-to-back walks of Jason Rogers and Matt Tuiasosopo, Rosa cracked a two-run double into the gap in left centerfield to cut the four-run deficit in half at 5-3. Jonathan Galvez followed Rosa's two-base hit with one of his own, just out of the diving reach of Darian Sandford in right centerfield, scoring Rosa to trim Lancaster's lead to a single run at 5-4. Vinny Siena was next, and he got New Britain even with an RBI single that allowed Galvez to cross the plate with the tying-run, and in the blink of an eye the contest was all square at five. Darren Ford put the capper on the wild comeback by way of a two-run double into the gap in left centerfield against losing pitcher Huascar Brazoban (1-2) that scored Siena and Vince Conde to put smiles on the faces of the fans in the Constitution State as New Britain took their first advantage of the night at 7-5. The Bees added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-5 cushion when Rosa drove in his fourth run of the night with a base hit, scoring Romero after he was issued a free pass to start the inning. The bullpen trio of Chris Reed, Adam Loewen, and Scribner did the rest by not allowing a run across three innings on the bump, striking out six, enabling the Bees to register their 24th come-from behind victory and eighth when trailing by three or more runs in a single ballgame. Rogers led the offensive attack for New Britain with three more base knocks, his team-best 25th multi-hit game in 2018. Photo provided courtesy of the New Britain Bees.
