Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
VICTORIAVILLE, Que. - Jonathan Huberdeau continued his outstanding playoff performance for the Saint John Sea Dogs, scoring the overtime winner in a 5-4 victory over the Victoriaville Tigres Tuesday.
Huberdeau tallied his league-leading 10th playoff goal 3:04 into the extra frame to give Saint John a 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven President's Cup quarter-final series. The 17-year-old NHL draft prospect was one of five Sea Dogs to find the back of the net, joining Jason Cameron, Eric Gelinas, Stephen MacAulay and Tomas Jurco. Gelinas also chipped in an assist while Mike Thomas and Pierre Durepos had two helpers each. Jacob DeSerres stopped 24 shots in the win.
Phillip Danault and Philippe Maillet had a goal and two assists each for Victoriaville. Benjamin Laliberte and Brandon Hynes also scored and David Honzik made 39 saves in the loss.
The Sea Dogs will look to wrap up the best-of-seven series in Game 5 Friday in Victoriaville, an 8 p.m. Atlantic Time start.
Danault got Victoriaville off to a good start with his goal at 2:21 of the first period. A highly touted draft prospect himself, Danault won a faceoff to the left of DeSerres, drove to the net and took a pass from the right-wing corner. His shot beat DeSerres for his fifth of the playoffs.
Cameron, playing just his second game of the playoffs, equalized at 3:32 on Saint John's first official shot of the game. The rookie won a draw to Honzik's right, then won a puck battle behind the net, walked out front and took a shot that eluded Honzik. Scott Oke and Durepos assisted on the goal, Cameron's first of the post-season.
Then, after a great save by DeSerres, Huberdeau came in on a long breakaway and hit the post. The puck came out to Gelinas at the right point and he beat Honzik before the goalie could recover. The unassisted marker, the third of the playoffs for Gelinas, came on a 4-on-4 at 6:43. Shortly thereafter, Bohumil Jank hauled Stanislav Galiev down on a short break and he was awarded a penalty shot. The Russian sniper couldn't get his deke past Honzik, however. The Tigres tied it with an extra attacker on for delayed penalty at 10:05. Laliberte took a pass from behind the net and converted for his first of the playoffs.
Neither team was able to score in the second period despite an 18-6 shots advantage in favour of the Sea Dogs. In the 12th minute, Oke appeared to knock in a rebound before Victoriaville controlled the puck on a delayed penalty, but the referees waved off the goal and called a hooking penalty against Jank instead. The Sea Dogs were unable to capitalize on that chance, or any of their five man advantages, but seized the lead on MacAulay's goal at 5:10 of the third. MacAulay finished a hardworking shift with Thomas and Alexandre Beauregard by walking out and stuffing one past Honzik to make it 3-2. Thomas and Durepos picked up the assists on the goal, MacAulay's second.
The Tigres continued to claw back, as Maillet scored on a strange play at 6:46. After Hynes missed on a breakaway, the trailing Maillet slipped in behind two defenders and poked in the carom off the back boards for his fourth.
Jurco scored what looked like the game-winner on a similar play at 14:26. Gelinas sprang Thomas on a short break, and Jurco was on the spot to convert his rebound off the back boards. But with 35.3 seconds left and an extra attacker on the ice, Hynes tied it from his perch to the left of DeSerres.
The Sea Dogs, however, were able to overcome the adversity of giving up three one-goal leads on the road. Galiev did some great work to keep the puck in the zone, then fired a shot that bounced down to sit on the goal line, where a streaking Huberdeau found it for the easy poke-in to cue the celebration.
The series continues with Game 5 in Victoriaville on Friday, an 8 p.m. Atlantic Time start. Tim Roszell will have the call on News 88.9 FM. Fans can also catch all the action online via the official TELUS QMJHL webcast (click HERE to order; charges apply).
Games 6 and 7, if necessary, would be back at Harbour Station on April 18 and 19, both at 7 p.m.
