Calgary Stampeders receiver/returner/defensive back Markus Howell today announced his retirement from football.

"It's been a long and interesting 10 years," said Howell. ‘I'm thankful to the Calgary Stampeders organization for allowing me to continue living a dream and win a Grey Cup championship."

Howell spent four seasons with Calgary, one with Ottawa and five with Winnipeg. He played in 171 regular-season games and 13 post-season contests including two Grey Cup championship games - losing in 2001 with Winnipeg and winning with Calgary in 2008.

The versatile Winnipeg native was utilized in several positions throughout his 10-year career, lining up as a receiver, kick returner, punt returner and defensive back. He caught 151 passes for 2,062 yards and nine touchdowns, returned 75 kickoffs for 1,642 yards and one score and brought 241 punts back for 2,200 yards, including a 96-yard touchdown return in 2007 with Calgary. He also added 28 tackles, 21 special-teams wrap-ups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries including one for a major.

"The Stampeders organization appreciates Markus' efforts and contributions over the years," said Stamps head coach/general manager John Hufnagel. "He helped us win a Grey Cup in 2008 and was always a consummate team player."

Howell was originally drafted by Winnipeg in the fourth round (25th overall) of the 2000 CFL Canadian Draft. He signed with Ottawa in 2005 and was picked by Calgary in the 2006 Ottawa Renegades dispersal draft.
