Houston Dynamo FC News Release

HOUSTON - Houston Dynamo FC host Portland Timbers FC, the reigning 2021 MLS Western Conference champions on Saturday at PNC Stadium to close a two-game homestand. Saturday's MLS match is the opener in a doubleheader that includes Houston Dynamo 2 making their PNC Stadium debut against Timbers 2 at 8 p.m. CT.

Houston Dynamo FC enters Saturday's game against the defending Western Conference champion with three victories in their last four games. With last Saturday's 4-3 victory over San Jose, the Dynamo have earned 10 points from their last four games. Houston will look for their fourth victory of the year on Saturday as they welcome a Portland side that earned a road victory on April 9 at Vancouver. The Timbers are the fifth Dynamo opponent in seven games that qualified for the 2021 postseason.

The Dynamo enter the match with a 4-1-5 record against the Timbers at home and look for their first victory over Portland at home since a 4-1 triumph on Sept. 15, 2018.

The Dynamo face a quick turnaround as they host the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Tuesday evening in the Third Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Houston will then travel to north Texas to face FC Dallas at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 23.

DYNAMO 2 ENTER SATURDAY'S MATCH UNDEFEATED

Dynamo 2 currently sit alone in first place in the MLS NEXT Pro standings following the team's 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City II on April 10. In that game, Dynamo 2 forward Roberto Avila recorded the first and only hat trick in MLS NEXT Pro history, accounting for all three of the goals in the game. Among those goals was a 45th minute volley from outside of the box that came via an assist by fellow forward Papa N'Doye.

Timbers 2 comes into this game with a record of 0-1-1, having lost the team's first match of the season 2-0 to Earthquakes II and having won the shootout in a 2-2 game against Whitecaps FC 2. In that second game, the goal scorers for Timbers 2 were Jamin Gogo Peters and Blake Bodily, while both shots were assisted by Pablo Bonilla. Dynamo 2 came out victorious in matchups against each of Timbers 2's opponents this season.

Outside of the stellar offensive performance by Avila in last week's game, Houston continued its stout defensive performance this season by earning their third consecutive clean sheet. Thus far this season, Dynamo 2 is the only team in MLS NEXT Pro to not have conceded a goal.

Here are three key points ahead of Saturday's doubleheader:

KEEP THE ATTACK HUMMING: Dynamo forward Sebastian Ferreira finished with a brace last Saturday earning himself a spot in the MLS Team of the Week. Ferreira is the fourth forward to score this season and the third attacker to finish with a brace for the team and the second in as many games. Forward Fafa Picault did so the week before. Meanwhile, forward Darwin Quintero leads the team with four goals. The trio will look to remain hot against a Portland backline that has conceded 13 goals, the second-most in the Western Conference so far this season. Houston has exploded offensively over the last two weeks. The Dynamo have scored seven goals in their last two games and are now tied for the second-most goals scored in the conference with 10.

DYNAMO AIM FOR SIX-POINT SATURDAY: The Dynamo will host their first doubleheader featuring the first and second teams on Saturday. Both teams will face their counterparts from Portland, and Houston Dynamo 2 will make its debut at PNC Stadium. Dynamo 2 is led by head coach Kenny Bundy and the team is undefeated to start the season and atop the MLS NEXT Pro table at 3-0-0. Dynamo 2 will play the remainder of their home games at AVEVA Stadium and tickets are available for all matches starting at $7.

DYNAMO 2 BACKLINE KEY IN STRONG START: Dynamo 2 has dominated this season on the defensive side of the ball, having yet to concede a goal through three games. The defense has been so stout that the organization has already promoted one of the team's starting center backs, Ethan Bartlow, to a starting position with the first team. It is not just the absence of any goals against, but there are a number of defensive metrics that have Dynamo 2 at or near the top of the league. Among the 14 teams that have played three games this season, Houston has allowed the fewest shots to their opponents with just seven. The team is also third in their percentage of duels won at 54.5 percent. Both teams with the best dual percentage are at 55 percent, while the fourth best team is at just 51.3 percent.
