Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - Houston Dynamo FC re-signed defender Maynor Figueroa through the 2021 MLS season with a club option for 2022, the Club announced today.
The Honduran international returns for his third season with the Dynamo after first signing with Houston on Jan. 30, 2019. The defender started in 19 games for the Dynamo in 2020 and led the Club in blocks (20), clearances (73) and interceptions (41) in his sixth Major League Soccer season.
"Maynor is a steady veteran presence who helps set the tone for our group each day, and we are pleased to welcome him back for the 2021 season," said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan.
Figueroa found the back of the net twice in 2020, scoring his first goal for the Club in Houston's 2-2 draw with Minnesota United on Sept. 19. The defender's second goal secured a point for the Dynamo late in the second-half on the road in Nashville on Sept. 26.
"Maynor is the ultimate professional and a great example for all players on and off the field," Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos said. "He is coming off another solid season and we are excited to have him back."
The defender is one of the most experienced players on the Dynamo roster and brings more than 17 years of international experience to the Club. Figueroa has earned 162 caps with the Honduran National Team and represented 'La Bicolor' at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The Honduran international will play in his seventh MLS season in 2021 after spending eight seasons in the English Premier League. He played in 45 games for Hull City during a two-year stint from 2013-2015. The defender won the 2013 English FA Cup with Wigan Athletic and appeared in 200 games for the Latics over six seasons.
Figueroa joined the Dynamo after three seasons with FC Dallas, where he played in 87 games across all competitions from 2016-2018. The defender helped lead the team to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship and MLS Supporters Shield in 2016. He began his MLS career toward the end of the 2015 with a move to the Colorado Rapids.
The Jutiapa, Honduras native joined Wigan after five seasons with CD Olimpia and one season with CD Victoria in his native Honduras. The defender scored six goals in 100 appearances for Olimpia and won four domestic league titles during his tenure with the team.
Figueroa holds a Green Card and does not occupy an International roster slot. With the addition of Figueroa, Houston Dynamo FC now has 28 players under contract for the 2021 Major League Soccer season.
