Houston Aeros News Release
HOUSTON (DECEMBER 7, 2011) --- The next time Houston Aeros fans head to Toyota Center to watch a game, they will be able to cast their votes as to which Aeros player will score first. Later in the game, they can help decide which acrobatic save by the goaltender is the "save of the game." And just by voting fans can win points and prizes all season long.
It's all a part of an effort by the American Hockey League's Aeros to use mobile-web technology to encourage fan participation throughout the game experience at Toyota Center.
Aeros President David Burke said the team has entered into an agreement with the developers of FANCONNET to power the system, but the fan engagement tool will be marketed under the banner of Aeros In-Game and be available starting Sunday, Dec. 11 against the Peoria Rivermen at Toyota Center.
Through FANCONNET (available at www.aerosingame.com) fans can play games, vote on the arena's choice of music, share photos and have them displayed on the scoreboard, receive team promotions and earn online mobile points and badges while working their way up the Aeros In-Game leaderboard. Every vote counts towards eligibility for daily and grand prizes for top Aeros In-Game point earners. In addition, fans can access the Aeros Web site for statistics, player information, ticket and schedule information.
"We've been looking for a platform that not only combines mobile-based entertainment into one system, but also creates community and competition with fans that are at the arena," Burke said. "Ultimately, Aeros In-Game gives us an opportunity to make transformational advances in the way we connect with our fan base and activate our sponsors."
Burke also said the Aeros will be the first pro hockey team to add a mobile game platform to their in-game experience. He believes the "gamification" aspect of this technology has enormous potential, "not only for our fans, but for advertiser sponsored incentives for fans to participate."
FANCONNET, a product of St. Paul, Minnesota-based Accelerated Innovations, is compatible with all web-enabled mobile devices so any fan that can browse the internet on their phone can use it. FANCONNET was originally launched in minor league baseball last season and plans a number of deployments across pro hockey and basketball this winter.
