Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Led by Jesus Luzardo, the RockHounds held Corpus Christi to five hits Tuesday night, leveling the series with a 3-2 victory at Whataburger Field.
Luzardo, making his Double-A debut, surrendered back-to-back doubles by Myles Straw and Carmen Benedetti to begin the first. Taylor Jones capped the two-run outburst with a sac fly to center field.
Luzardo responded by retiring 15 of the final 17 men he faced. The 20-year-old A's prospect struck out five and walked one.
Hooks starter Josh James battled through three innings of work. Sean Murphy put the Hounds on the board with a two-out RBI double in the first.
James stranded the bases loaded and struck out the side in the second.
Midland mounted a two-out rally in the third thanks to a string of singles by Murphy, Tyler Marincov, and Brett Veritgan. Richie Martin tied the game at 2 by coaxing a bases-loaded free pass.
Corpus Christi lefty Sean Stutzman was saddled with the tough-luck loss. Stutzman scattered two hits and one walk over four innings of relief. The lone run against him was an unearned marker in the seventh.
The Hooks squandered a prime scoring chance in the eighth. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, hard-throwing right-hander J.B. Wendelken struck out two and induced a lineout to escape trouble.
Kevin Hill spun two scoreless innings to complete the contest for Corpus Christi.
The Hooks, who have won nine of their last 12, send Brock Dykxhoorn to the hill Wednesday night. First pitch 7:05 at Whataburger Field.
