Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Tyson Ross, Jon Hunton and Jared Lansford combined on a four-hit shutout as Midland blanked Corpus Christi 4-0 Friday at Whataburger Field before 7,069.
With a Hooks loss or Midland win, Corpus Christi is eliminated from playoff contention. The RockHounds are 36-24 in Texas League second-half competition, the Hooks 26-34.
The Hooks mustered just four hits for the second straight night. Ross (4-3), Hunton and Lansford pitched six, two and one inning(s), respectively. Ross struck out five and gave up two hits, a single to Jason Castro in the second and Jonathan Fixler's sixth-inning triple.
Midland scored all the runs it would need in the first. Corey Wimberly opened with a single to right-center, Josh Horton reached on an error and Josh Donaldson powered a 1-1 pitch over the left-field berm for his eighth home run and a 3-0 lead.
It was a rough beginning for Fernando Abad (0-1), making his Hooks debut after promotion from High-A Lancaster of the California League. A reliever for the JetHawks, Abad went four innings, allowed five hits and a walk. He fanned four and 40 of his 54 pitches were strikes.
After Chia-Jen Lo worked three scoreless frames, Corey Brown drove his ninth home run over the Midland bullpen off Danny Meszaros in the eighth to make it 4-0.
Lo completed his stint by striking out Donaldson and Matt Spencer with the bases full.
Left-hander Douglas Arguello (2-4) takes the ball for Corpus Christi Saturday night at San Antonio's Wolff Municipal Stadium in a 7:05 start. The Missions counter with Ernesto Frieri (9-8).
