Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-The Bowling Green Hot Rods broke open a one-run game by scoring eight times over the final three innings to defeat the Dayton Dragons 11-2 on Saturday night. A crowd of 8,155 saw the Dragons Opening Night game at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons scored in the first inning and did not trail until Bowling Green scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Hot Rods built their lead with four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to close out the scoring.

The Dragons finished the night with six hits and also drew six walks, but they stranded 10 runners and went just 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position. The Dayton attack was led by Miles Gordon, who delivered a triple and double along with a walk, stolen base, and run scored. Stuart Fairchild and Montrell Marshall each had an RBI single for the Dragons.

Dragons starting pitcher Tyler Mondile (0-1) pitched well but was charged with the loss. Over Mondile's first four innings, he allowed only one unearned run. He surrendered two runs in the fifth before leaving the game with two outs in the inning. His final line included four and two-thirds innings while allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.

Dragons relievers struggled to throw strikes late in the game, allowing seven walks over the final three innings.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Gordon tripled and scored on Marshall's single. In the third, the Dragons broke a 1-1 tie when Jeter Downs doubled and scored on Fairchild's two-out single to make it 2-1, but the Dayton offense could produce only two hits and no runs over the final six innings.

Notes: The Dragons placed outfielder Andy Sugilio on the disabled list before the game with a strained right hamstring. Montrell Marshall, the first cousin of longtime Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, replaced Sugilio on the roster.

Up Next: The Dragons and Hot Rods meet again on Sunday at Fifth Third Field at 2:07 p.m. Wendolyn Bautista will start for the Dragons against Bowling Green's Alex Valverde. The game will be televised live on Dayton's CW (Channel 26 on DirecTV, Dish Network, and over-the-air; Spectrum Cable channels 13 and 1013).
