JUPITER, FL - The Cardinals jumped on Florida Marlin Ismael Valdez for five runs in the first and two in the second, and went on the defeat the rival Hammerheads 10-8 on Sunday night in front of 4,191 at Roger Dean Stadium.

Valdez (0-1), making his first rehab start after a broken right fibula kept him out of action all season, lasted just two innings and did not return after a 13-minute rain delay in the bottom of the second.

The Cardinals scored all their first inning runs with two outs. Highlighting the inning was a two-run double by Terry Evans.

Mike McCoy hit his first home run of the season of Valdez in the second inning to make it a 7-1 game.

The Hammerheads battled back and made things interesting in the middle innings. A three-run fourth, which included a two-run home run by Lee Mitchell, cut the Cardinals' lead to 8-5. The home run was Mitchell's 10th on the season.

The Hammerheads plated a single run in the sixth inning to make it 8-6, but the Cardinals added two runs in the bottom of the frame to go up by four runs.

Kevin Randel hit his eighth homer of the year in the eighth inning for the last run of the night for the Hammerheads. Mark Worrell pitched the ninth for his 19th save.

Cardinals' starter Eric Haberer earned the win despite allowing five runs on 11 hits in five innings. Haberer (4-2) also struck out five while walking just one.

After combining for 16 runs and 26 hits on Saturday night, the offenses were at it again. Tonight the teams totaled 18 runs and 29 hits.

Tempers flared early as Matt Dryer was ejected in the second inning for arguing a safe call at third base, and Hammerheads' manager Tim Cossins was tossed for arguing balls and strikes.

The teams will meet again on Monday night for the third game of a four-game set.
