Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (July 3, 2005) - There is something about playing in front of large crowds that really brings out the best in the Fort Myers Miracle. They improved to 8-0 when playing in front of 3,000 or more people as they defeated the Sarasota Reds 5-1 in front of a standing room only crowd of 7,954 at Hammond Stadium on Sunday night.

Trying to send the crowd home happy the Miracle came out of the gate with a vengeance. In the second inning Trent Oeltjen reached on a two base throwing error by Reds catcher Miguel Perez. Scott Whitrock's bunt single moved Oeltjen to third and he scored on a Justin Arneson single to center.

In the third Brock Peterson singled with two out and after Oeltjen walked, Whitrock doubled to left that scored Peterson. They tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Matt Moses walked and Kyle Phillips singled to right. The right fielders throw to third was cut off and second baseman Luis Bolivar's throw to first to try and get Phillips to far off the bag went into the dugout which allowed Moses to score and Phillips to go to third. He scored on a sac fly by Peterson to make it 4-0.

The Miracle finished their scoring in the sixth on an RBI single by JR Taylor. Matt Tolbert finished the night 3-5 while Whitrock and Arneson were 2-4, each with an RBI.

Tristan Crawford, making his second start of the season after coming out of the bullpen in his first 18 appearances, went five shutout innings allowing five hits while walking two and striking out six in picking up his third win of the season and first as a starter. Jannio Gutierrez went 2.1 innings allowing just one run and Chris Schutt earned his fifth save of the season by pitching a scoreless 1.2 innings.

The teams will now switch venues and play a two game series at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota beginning Monday at 4:00 p.m. The Miracle will send LHP Jan Granado (4-0, 2.50) to the hill against Reds RHP Brock Till (3-3, 4.43).
