Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Jonathan Meyer's two-out single scored Ruben Sosa from third base to push Corpus Christi past Tulsa 6-5 before 4,708 Monday at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, who won all six games of their eighth 2014 home stand, are 10-8 in Texas League second-half action and 44-44 overall. The Drillers stand 7-11 and 45-42.
Jared Simon opened the ninth by knotting the contest at 5, his eighth home run just clearing the left-field wall. The victim was Chris Devenski (1-0), who first threw three scoreless frames in his Double-A debut. The former White Sox farmhand merited the victory, holding the Drillers to two hits and fanning four over four.
Cole White (3-3) got two quick outs before Sosa's single to center and a walk by Andrew Aplin. A double steal preceded the game-winner.
Corpus Christi trailed 4-0 after three innings.
Ruben Alaniz issued a one-out walk to Cristhian Adames in the first and Taylor Featherston followed with a sharp single to left. After both moved up on a ground out, Brian Humphries delivered a booming two-run double to right-center, giving Tulsa early command.
Humphries again inflicted damage two innings later, his one-out looper into right-center plating Featherston (walk) and Ryan Casteel (single).
Alaniz lasted one more frame, exiting with four hits, five walks and two strikeouts in his first appearance since returning to the Hooks from extended spring training and a stint in the Gulf Coast League.
Drillers starter Richard Castillo blanked Corpus Christi through the first four innings, but suddenly lost his command as the Hooks mounted a two-out, five-run, five-hit rally while batting around. Castillo walked Tyler Heineman before yielding a double to Carlos Perdomo. M.P. Cokinos' two-run single put the home club on the board. A Tony Kemp single set up the exclamation point, Sosa's three-run homer, the third bomb of his professional career.
Castillo was lifted for Nate Striz after Aplin's single and 4 2/3 frames, six hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
Striz found himself in deep sixth-inning trouble, willing a two-out, bases-loaded jam to Ken Roberts. Center fielder Tyler Massey made a diving catch of Kemp's sinking liner to keep the score at 5-4.
Heineman threw out three base runners from behind the plate - one each in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Hooks embark Tuesday on a four-game road trip to Frisco.
