Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks took the series opener against the Springfield Cardinals, 8-0, before 5,515 fans at Whataburger Field on Thursday night.
After Cardinals RHP Mike Mayers (L, 0-2) and Hooks RHP Mark Appel (W, 2-0) alternated two scoreless innings apiece to begin the game, the Hooks (6-1) struck in the bottom of the third. LF Leo Heras and RF Brandon Meredith sparked the charge with back-to-back triples to open the inning. After Meredith's RBI triple, 2B Tony Kemp worked a walk to put two men on. SS Carlos Correa then knocked an RBI single to left, scoring Meredith for the 2-0 lead.
Mayers kept the Cardinals (1-6) close with a scoreless fourth, but Corpus Christi struck for three runs in the fifth. With one away, Mayers clipped Correa with a pitch, putting one on. 3B Colin Moran then doubled Correa to third, before DH Telvin Nash lined a three-run home run over the left field fence, making it 5-0.
Cardinals RHP Heath Wyatt got Springfield out of the rest of the fifth, before tossing a scoreless sixth. RHP Joey Donofrio pitched in with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but the Hooks padded the lead further in the eighth. With one on and RHP Ronnie Shaban on the mound, Heras drove his second triple of the game, bringing in CF Teoscar Hernandez. Heras came home on a throwing error that also put Meredith on at second base, before an RBI double from Kemp capped the rally and plated the Hooks eighth run.
Appel tossed the first five innings for the Hooks, followed by a pair of scoreless innings apiece from RHP Travis Ballew and RHP Daniel Minor to close the 8-0 win for Corpus Christi.
