CORPUS CHRISTI - Carlos Correa, Colin Moran and Telvin Nash drove in two runs each as Corpus Christi defeated Springfield 8-5 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game Friday.

With severe weather - including a tornado warning - bearing down on Whataburger Field, officials suspended the game at 9:35. Rain began at 10:03 and the contest was terminated at 10:21.

Springfield tagged Kyle Westwood for a run in the first. Back-to-back opening singles by Charlie Tilson and Nick Martini preceded Jacob Wilson's sacrifice fly to deep left.

The Hooks immediately matched that run and added another off Thomas Lee (0-2). Tony Kemp drew a lead-off walk and stole second before scooting home on Correa's scorched double inside the left-field line. One out later, Nash produced a run-scoring single the same direction.

Another Kemp opening base-on-balls, Moran's double and a Nash grounder generated the third Corpus Christi run two frames later.

Westwood (1-0) managed to qualify for the victory with five innings in which he allowed seven hits, a walk and struck out four. The University of North Florida product stranded seven baserunners, including two each in the first, third and fourth.

Curtains came for Lee during a five-run Hooks sixth. Lead-off man Brandon Meredith's second home run of the season was the first salvo; Leo Heras and Correa (RBI) doubled, and Moran and Roberto Pena posted run-scoring singles.

Pena had a two-out hit in the fourth, his first as a Double-A player.

Lee, charged with three runs in the frame, exited in the wake of nine hits, six runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Justin Wright absorbed the other damage.

Springfield then jumped on Angel Baez and Jandel Gustave for four runs to pull within three. Jonathan Rodriguez's two-run, bases-loaded single followed walks to Martini and Wilson. Alex Mejia contributed a two-run single as well.

Play was suspended after Teoscar Hernandez ran down Michael Ohlman's drive to deep center with an over-the-shoulder grab and two on.

Heras has two triples and two doubles over his last seven plate appearances. Corpus Christi is 5-0 vs. Springfield in the season series and has outscored the Cardinals 42-13.

The Cardinals and Hooks wrap their series Saturday at 7:05. Ballpark gates open at 5:30, and the first 1,750 fans take home a Hooks Light Blue George Springer Jersey from CITGO.

Springfield lefty Kyle Hald (0-0) faces Chris Devenski (1-0).
