Hooks Snap Missions' Win Streak in Extras

San Antonio Missions News Release

Corpus Christi outlasted San Antonio 4-2 in 10 innings Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Wolff Stadium.

Monday featured a highly anticipated pitching matchup between San Antonio's James Needy and Corpus Christi's Michael Feliz.

Both starters did not disappoint, each allowing just one hit through the first three innings. However, the Hooks broke through in the fourth with the game's first run when Jon Kemmer drove in Colin Moran from second with a double to left.

In the top of the sixth, Corpus Christi pushed its lead to two courtesy of A.J. Reed's run-producing fielder's choice.

San Antonio could not touch Feliz, who allowed just four hits and two walks, while striking out five over seven shutout innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Missions took advantage of Feliz's departure, trimming their deficit to one with a clutch, two-out, RBI triple to center by San Diego rehabber Cory Spangenberg (1-for-3 with a walk) off reliever Juan Minaya. The Hooks went to bullpen again and summoned closer Jandel Gustave, who kept the score 2-1 by inducing a Luis Domoromo groundout.

Fortunately, for the Missions, Gustave (4-1) could not hold the lead in the ninth as Yeison Asencio sent the game to extras with a bloop, RBI single to left.

The Hooks quickly shook off the wasted lead in the top of the 10th against reliever Brandon Alger (3-5), plating two on another Reed run-producing fielder's choice and a Teoscar Hernandez steal of home.

Aaron West kept the Missions off the board in the bottom half to notch his fourth save of the season. The loss snapped San Antonio's four-game win streak.

San Antonio (16-22, 47-61) resumes its three-game series with Corpus Christi (21-17, 69-39) on $2 Tuesday presented by KCWX. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Dennis O'Grady (3-3, 4.91) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with fellow righty Ruben Alaniz (3-2, 5.52).

Notes: Spangenberg, who is expected to be with San Antonio through at least this series, was placed on the disabled with a left knee contusion on June 30. In 67 games with the Padres this season, the Clarks Summit, PA native was hitting .254 (45-for-177) with eight doubles, two triples, two homers, 11 RBI, 21 runs scored and seven steals. Spangenberg played in 142 games for San Antonio during the 2013-14 seasons, hitting a combined .310 (176-for-568) with 27 doubles, 11 triples, four homers, 42 RBI and 73 runs scored. Luis Domoromo (1-for-5) extended his hit streak to 10 games.
