Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(WICHITA, Kan.) - Right fielder Hunter Pence and first baseman Walter Young each drove in four runs to lead the Corpus Christi Hooks to an 11-5 win at Wichita in Game 1 of the Texas League Championship Series Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The road triumph gives the Hooks control in this best-of-five title series.

Knotted at 1-1 after the first inning, the Hooks grabbed a big lead with a four-run top half of the second that featured six hits. With runners at first and third and two men out, designated hitter Tike Redman singled to plate Jonny Ash from third for a 2-1 Hooks' lead. Pence followed with a single to right-center, bringing Josh Anderson in from second for a 3-1 score. Young was up next, and his blistering single to left-center brought in two more runs for a 5-1 Corpus Christi advantage.

Pence and Young also provided run-scoring hits in the seventh, when the Hooks tallied five times to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Wranglers' pitchers issued five walks in the inning and also hit a batter. The hits by Pence and Young were the only safeties in the frame for the Hooks.

Pence finished the night 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI's. Young had a 3-for-4 evening with four RBI's. Redman, who batted just ahead of Pence and Young in the order, went 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.

Starter Juan Gutierrez collected his second win this post-season. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out four. David Rollandini retired six of the seven men he faced over the final two innings to help secure the win.

Wichita starter Zack Greinke suffered the loss. Having surrendered five runs on nine hits over the first two innings, Greinke was close to an early exit. He regained his bearings and shut the Hooks down for the next three frames before giving up a run in the sixth. For the night, Greinke allowed six runs on 12 hits over six innings.

Ronnie Martinez, who last pitched on September 1st in a win at San Antonio, will start Game 2 of the TLCS Tuesday night in Wichita. He'll be opposed by Billy Buckner, who is also making his first appearance this post-season.
