Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks rallied for six runs in the fifth inning en route to the 9-3 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,017 fans at Whataburger Field on Tuesday night.

Cardinals RHP Anthony Shew (L, 0-1) began his Double-A debut with a quick 1-2-3 first inning, before the Hooks (26-19) tallied one run against him with a two-out RBI single from C Lorenzo Quintana in the second.

The Cardinals (23-22), though, swung in front right away in the top of the third against LHP Ryan Hartman (W, 4-1). With one away, 2B Stefan Trosclair worked a walk to spark the charge. SS Edmundo Sosa and CF Lane Thomas then connected on consecutive RBI doubles, propelling Springfield into the 2-1 lead.

Cardinals 1B Chris Chinea added to the lead with a solo blast to left field opening the fourth inning. It marked Chinea's fourth round-tripper of the year and made it a 3-1 Springfield advantage.

After keeping the Hooks to just one run on three hits through his first four innings, the Hooks rattled off six runs in the bottom of the fifth. The frame started with a solo shot from Quintana, and was followed by six more straight hits including four consecutive RBI singles by RF Stephen Wrenn, 3B Josh Rojas, 1B Taylor Jones and LF Carmen Benedetti. Benedetti's base hit came against LHP Colton Thomson, who dug in with a strikeout for the inning's first out. After a walk and a strikeout, SS Alex De Goti capped the six-run rally with an RBI base hit, opening the lead to 7-3.

Thomson tossed scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, but the Hooks struck for two more against RHP Estarlin Arias in the eighth to account for the 9-3 final score.

The Cardinals look to rebound in game two of the series on Wednesday at 7:05pm with RHP Conner Greene on the mound. Catch all the action on Jock 98.7 FM and SpringfieldCardinals.com, and tune in 15 minutes early for the Coyote's Sports Cafe Pregame Show.
