Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Hooks held on after a late push by the San Antonio Missions for a 7-5 victory Wednesday at Whataburger Field.
Having led 5-0 and 7-2 in the ballgame, the Missions pushed across three runs in the ninth against Tyler Brown. But Nick Hernandez shut the door with the tying run at home plate.
Matt Ruppenthal made his first home start and blanked the visitors over 5.0 innings, walking four and striking out three. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, fanning Olivier Basabe.
Ruppenthal and Brown - a pair of Vanderbilt University products - combined to carry a shutout in the eighth inning as the Hooks - playing as the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits - leveled the series at a game apiece.
The Hooks got a pair of runs in the third on RBI singles from Joe Perez and Corey Julks.
Matthew Barefoot blasted his fourth home run in his last five games to make it 5-0 in the seventh, and Cesar Salazar made it a five-run game again in the eighth with a two-run shot (5).
The series continues Thursday with R.J. Freure making his Double-A debut for the Hooks.
