Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - San Antonio committed five errors, but its bullpen tossed four innings of one-hit relief to lead the Missions to an 8-6 win in front of a crowd of 5,754 at Whataburger Field in the first-half finale Monday night.
The Hooks jumped in front first in the seesaw affair, plating two runs in both the first and second innings, and one each in the third and fourth. Jiovanni Mier belted his fifth home run of the season in the second and Enrique Hernandez hit his fifth in the third.
San Antonio (38-31) starting pitcher Jose De Paula allowed the first four Hooks runs before he left the game with two outs in the second inning due to tightness in his left rotator cuff. Josh Geer (3-3) followed him out of the bullpen and tossed two and one-third innings of relief.
Corpus Christi (42-28) starter Bobby Doran breezed through the first inning and allowed single runs in the second and third innings, before the Missions chased him from the game in the fourth. The first three San Antonio hitters reached, on a pair of singles and a hit batsman, to load the bases with nobody out. Keith Bodie pulled Doran in favor of Nick Tropeano, who allowed one run on an error, but escaped the jam thanks to a sparkling defensive play by third baseman Jonathan Meyer.
With one out and the bases full, Cory Spangenberg lined out to Meyer, who speared the ball, dove to the bag and touched third base with his glove to double off the runner, A.J. Kirby-Jones, and help Tropeano out of the inning.
After he escaped the fourth-inning bases-loaded jam, Tropeano (2-5) ran into trouble in the fifth. The Missions banged out six hits, including two doubles and a triple, en route to four runs. Three of the four runs scored with two outs and gave San Antonio a 7-6 lead.
Matt Lollis, Chris Rearick, Jeremy McBryde and Matt Stites combined to pitch the final four innings for San Antonio and allowed just one hit and one walk to go with nine strikeouts. Hooks batters struck out 14 times in Monday night's game and went 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Jake Blackwood added a run with a solo homer in the top of the ninth to account for the final Missions' tally.
The series continues Tuesday at 7:05 with the start of the second half, as San Antonio sends right-hander Matt Andriese (7-1, 2.14) to the mound against the Corpus Christi tandem of Ruben Alaniz (2-6, 5.08) and Jorge De Leon (0-1, 5.06).
