Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers could not hold onto an 8-2 lead with just two innings left in the game, but were still able to squeeze out a 9-8 victory over the Willmar Stingers in ten innings.

After trailing 2-0, Rochester jumped out on top with a big fifth inning. Sending ten men to the plate, the Honkers were able to score five runs on two walks, two hit batters, two hits, and two errors by the Willmar defense.

Designated hitter Trevor Podratz (Hawai'i), first baseman Chad Wallach (Cal State Fullerton), and center fielder Dakota Smith (Kansas) each hit solo home runs in the win.

Honkers starter Kevin Johnson (Illinois) had his most effective outing of the summer as he tossed 7.0 innings and gave up just two earned runs on three hits, but was given a tough-luck no-decision. Johnson made the Stingers bats miss all day with ten total strikeouts, but he did however walk five batters.

Willmar starter Jerad McCrummen (Texas Tech) was also tagged with a no-decision after he gave up five runs in 4.2 innings of work. However, four of those runs were unearned.

Rochester pitcher Elliot Engle (Doane) could not hold the Honkers lead and gave up six runs in the final 2.0 innings including two two-run homeruns to send the game to extra innings.

Trevor Podratz delivered the game winning hit in the top of the tenth inning to give the Honkers a 9-8 lead.

Ty McDevitt (Minnesota) came on and shut down the Stingers in the bottom of the tenth to seal the victory for the Honkers and solidify the two-game series split.

The Honkers (10-15) are off tomorrow but will be back at home on Monday June 25th against the Alexandria Beetles (8-15) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Jared Miller (Vanderbilt) will be on the bump for the Honkers. In his only start of the season on June 18th, the tall lefty tossed 4.0 innings against Mankato and did not allow an earned run, and was handed a no-decision.
