Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers travelled to St. Cloud for a pair of double headers this weekend and split in the first half of the weekend on Saturday in St. Cloud. The Honkers would drop game one by a score of 11-0 and rebound in game two, winning 6-5 in eight innings at Joe Faber Field.

The River Bats used a four run first inning in game one to lead themselves to an 11-0 victory over the Honkers. Rochester would only muster up six hits in the game, two of them were doubles off the bat of Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State).

Drew Bowen (RsJr, Oral Roberts) would get the start on the mound for the Honkers in game one but a 35 pitch first inning would end the game early for him, forcing him to be removed from the game. Jordan Jakubov (RsJr, Kansas) and Reid Roper (Fr, Illinois) would pitch the remainder of the game, both getting hit hard by St. Cloud in the loss.

The River Bats would start game two like they did game one by scoring in the first inning, this time it was just one run however. The Honkers would come back in the top of the fifth with a five run inning. The Honkers would score their five runs on just one hit. All five runs would be recorded as unearned runs with two errors made in the inning. The River Bats would tie it up in their half of the fifth and the game would remain tied through seven to force extra innings.

The Honkers would add one run in the extra inning after Coy led the inning off with a single. A pass ball would advance him to second and a fielder's choice to third before Anthony Hutting (So, Cal State Fullerton) drove him in on a fielders choice. That would be all the Honkers would need, as closer Austin House (So, New Mexico) finished up his three innings of work by closing the door on the River Bats and getting the win in game two.

Coy went 1-for-3 in game two, adding a single to his two doubles in the first game going 3-for-6 in the double header. As a team the Honkers would only manage two hits in game number two, the other one by Hutting.

The Honkers got a great jolt out of their defense with a 5-4-3-2 triple play in the bottom of the fourth inning, to get out of a jam with runners on the corners. The batter grounded the ball to third baseman Devin Thaut (Jr, Southern Polytechnic State) who threw to second baseman Davy Wright (So, TCU) for out number one. Wright then threw to Coy at first base for the double play. Coy would then catch the runner on third base trying to take home and gun the ball to catcher Brett Hambright (Jr, Oregon) for the tag out at home and a triple play.

The two teams will be back at it for at least 14 more innings tomorrow when they finish up their season with each other at Joe Faber Field. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 6:05 pm with game two following the conclusion of game one.
