Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, WI - A marathon day that ended in the morning left the 'Frogs two games back of first place after a split with the Eau Claire Express in a doubleheader Saturday evening. Green Bay won game one 7-3 and lost game two 4-3. The twin bill was scheduled to start at 5:05 pm but was delayed over 90 minutes after a storm with 80 mph winds ripped through the area. It turned into a gorgeous evening once the first game finally started at 6:40 pm. Game two ended after midnight.
The Bullfrogs jumped on the board first in game one with a two-out RBI single from Paul Hoenecke who had a great doubleheader. He extended his hitting streak to nine games and was a combined 5-8 with two home runs and a double in the twin bill. The Express would come back and tie it right away with a two-out RBI single of their own in the second.
Green Bay pushed across another tally in the second before they delivered the big blow in the third inning with four runs. Hoenecke started it off with a solo shot which was one of three RBI he had on the day. That was all Drew Bradshaw needed as he went 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs. He did have to dance around some trouble throughout the game as he gave up nine hits. Bradshaw earned the win and improves to 2-0 on the year.
Eau Claire was designated the home team in game two as the 'Frogs and Express made-up a game rained out in Eau Claire on June 22nd. The Express got on the board first with a two-out two-RBI double from Josh Scheffert. Tony Vocca started for Eau Claire and did not allow at hit in the first three innings.
In the third however he walked the first three hitters he faced to load the bases. He then struck out the top three hitters in Green Bay's order to strand the bases loaded. The Express took a 3-0 lead in the third after a sacrifice fly by Zac Fisher. In the fourth, Hoenecke hit the tenth pitch of his at-bat to lead the inning off over the right field fence for a home run. It was his third in as many games. That broke up the no-hitter. Vocca would then load the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch before he was removed by Field Manager Dale Varsho with one out and the bases loaded.
After Alec Mehrten fouled out before Jonathan Walsh drove in a pair with a two-out single to tie the game at three. The winning run for the Express came in to score in the fourth inning after a one-out double and walk forced Bullfrogs' starter Matt Roberts out of the game. Anders Dzurak came in and gave up an RBI single to the first batter he faced and that was it. The Express took a 4-3 lead on Lawton Langford's base knock and Dzurak did not allow another hit in his final 2.1 innings of work.
The Bullfrogs now sit two games back of the first-place La Crosse Loggers headed into game three of the four game set with the Eau Claire Express on Sunday at 1:05 pm.
