Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, WI - July 31st, 2011 - On a hot muggy Sunday at Joannes Stadium fans saw a game that had 27 total hits to go along with 16 combined runs. In the 10-6 win, the 'Frogs managed to score at least one run in every inning except for the seventh. Phillip Ervin led the way for the Bullfrogs with a 3-4 effort with 4 RBI and was a single away from hitting for the cycle. Paul Hoenecke's hitting streak is now at ten games and is on a hot streak for a Bullfrogs team that has won seven of their last nine and is now 1.5 games behind La Crosse, who plays Madison Sunday at 5:05 pm.
Green Bay began things immediately in the first. After Ty Filliben reached on a walk, Paul Hoenecke hit a single to put runners on the corners. Cameron Dullnig hit a groundout RBI that scored Filliben and Ervin would triple to right to score Hoenecke.
In the top of the second Eau Claire tied the game after three straight singles led off the inning. 'Frogs starter Zak Hermans prevented any more damage with runners on the corners by getting Ty Forney to groundout into a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the second, after Steven Halcomb reached third on a single by Jacob May, Halcomb and May executed a double steal of second and home to give the 'Frogs the lead back at 3-2.
The 'Frogs and Express would exchange runs through the next three innings. In the third Ryan Schilter hit a single to right that scored Phillip Ervin, it was one of three hits on the day for Schilter. The very next inning, Paul Hoenecke would get his second hit of the day driving in Jacob May who earlier reached on a double. In the fifth, after Schilter singled to first, returning Bullfrog Nick Stein hit a shot to center that brought Schilter home. Ervin would cap the Green Bay scoring fest with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. After Eau Claire scored in the fifth and sixth innings thanks to a home run and single by Nick Addison, the lead for Green Bay was 8-4.
After a scoreless seventh, Eau Claire would make the game interesting in the eighth. The Express led off with a single by Jordan Camel and a walk by Justin Viele. During the next at-bat against Addison, 'Frogs reliever John Colella appeared to have injured either his oblique or hip on the first pitch. Colella would leave the game, and Adam Cimber came in to replace the injured Bullfrog. After a walk loaded the bases with no outs, Alex Allbritton singled to right to score Camel and kept the bases loaded with no outs. Zac Fisher would immediately follow that up with a sac fly to score Viele. After a single by Ryan Freitag loaded the bases again with only one out, Cimber was able to strikeout Ryan Shober, and get Josh Scheffert to pop out to first to end the inning.
Green Bay tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eight to regain a four run lead. Ervin cracked his third hit of the evening, a double to left field, that scored Hoenecke. Joe Betcher followed Ervin with a RBI single that gave the 'Frogs a comfortable 10-6 lead. The lead would be all Green Bay needed as Cimber pitched a scoreless ninth to record the save. Cimber's ERA on the year has now dropped to an incredible 0.33
Bullfrogs starter Zak Hermans pitched five innings giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out three for the win, and Express starter Luke Westphal only made it through three innings giving up four runs on four hits while striking out five, but also walking five.
