Honkers Fall to Stingers in Season Finale

(Rochester,MN) - The Rochester Honkers were unable to complete a three-game sweep over the Willmar Stingers as they fell 3-2 on Saturday, July 27, at Mayo Field.

Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out double to the left-center field wall. He came around to score on a two-run homerun from Tyler Baker (Wichita State) to give the Honkers an early 2-0 lead. The homerun was Baker's second in the last three games. Hanawahine led the Honkers offense with a pair of hits on the night.

Marc Flores started the top of the fourth inning for the Stingers with a single. Max Kuhn drew a one-out walk to represent the game-tying run. Flores scored on a single from Colton Bottomley, while Kuhn came across on a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2.

Willmar gained its first lead of the night in the top of the seventh inning as Chris Barnett drew a lead-off walk and came around to score after consecutive singles from Jake Gronsky, Tyler Leffler, and Zack Tillery.

Colin Poche earned the win (4-2) for the Stingers as he allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings of work. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) took the loss (2-4) for the Honkers. He allowed one run on three hits in one inning. Honkers starting pitcher Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) allowed two runs, one earned on four hits in six innings, while striking out nine. Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) and Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Honkers. Bret Dahlson picked up his 11th save of the season as he recorded the game's final out.

The Honkers will now begin an eight-game road trip in the next nine days in Battle Creek, MI, on Sunday, July 28 at 4:05 p.m. (CT.) Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) is scheduled to make the start for Rochester (4-17, 22-34.) The road trip will make stops in Battle Creek, Lakeshore, and St. Cloud, before concluding in Thunder Bay. The Honkers will return home to Mayo Field on Tuesday, August 6, at 7:05 p.m. to host the Bombers and begin a six-game home stand to wrap-up the season.
