Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers lost a fourth consecutive game as they came up short in a 3-1 loss to the Mankato MoonDogs Thursday night at Mayo Field.
After 3.2 scoreless innings, Rochester starter Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) allowed three consecutive two-out hits to Jake Ellison, David Masters, and Ryan Rosthenhausler and the MoonDogs struck first in the fourth inning. Pingel allowed another two-out run in the fifth inning when Jonathon Rodriguez's line drive was misplayed by Honkers center fielder Alex Greer (Iowa Western) for a RBI triple to give Mankato a 2-0 lead after four and a half innings. Pingel (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Rochester threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth inning when Connor Goedert (Neosho Community College) delivered his second single of the game with one out. Toby Thomas (Pensacola State) followed with a double to the left-center field gap, but he was thrown out when he rounded second base. Matt Halloran (Minnesota) grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning. Goedert, playing in his first game for the Honkers, was the only Rochester batter with multiple hits.
The MoonDogs picked up an insurance run in the eighth inning, again with two outs, when Jake Ellison walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single from Masters. The RBI hit was Masters fourth hit on the night.
The Honkers got on the board in the bottom half of the eighth inning when Greer drove his first homerun over the left field fence. Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) tripled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but was thrown out at home plate when he tried to advance on a ball that got by MoonDogs catcher Matt Jones.
Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College,) Alex Tenorio (Menlo College,) and Hayden Edwards (Kansas) combined to pitch 4.1 innings in relief for Rochester. Brock Dykxhoorn earned the win (1-0) for Mankato. He pitched six scoreless innings and allowed four hits.
Rochester (4-5) will try to snap a four-game losing streak against Thunder Bay on Friday, June 7 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) is slated to make his second start of the season for the Honkers. He did not allow an earned run in six innings last Sunday against Alexandria.
