Hong Scores in Overtime, Caps Pick up Second Straight Win

February 25, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

James Hong became the overtime hero for the second time this season as Madison picked up their 20th win of the season on Sunday evening. Hong's first overtime game winner came back in October when the Capitols took down Youngstown at the Covelli Centre. The goal was Hong's 14th of the season, which is fourth best on the team this year and one shy of a career high.

With the victory, Madison pick up back-to-back wins for the first time since January 20th and 26th wins over Fargo and Tri-City. The Caps jump over Chicago to regain sole possession of fifth place in the Eastern Conference by one point, still with a game in hand on the Steel.

Aiden Long scored the game's opening goal late in the first period off of a Charlie Michaud pass. Long has scored in two of his last three games and six times total this season.

Coming off of serving a one-game suspension, Jack Brandt was able to give Madison a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission with a goal coming off another Charlie Michaud feed. The goal for Brandt was his eighth of the season and became an important goal down the stretch of the game for Madison.

After being down 2-0 at the first intermission, the RoughRiders kept pushing the gas pedal down. Cedar Rapids outshot Madison 36-18 in the contest, slipping two past Patriks Berzins. They were able to tie things halfway through the third to force overtime against Madison, which became the third straight overtime between one another, Madison has won all three.

Patriks Berzins allowed only two goals against the RoughRiders, his lowest since a January 26th win over Tri-City. Berzins had a .944 save percentage in the contest stopping 34 or 36 en route to picking up his first win since that same game against Tri-City in late January.

The Capitols look to continue their winning ways of the past two games on Friday in Muskegon for a standalone game against the Lumberjacks. Following that game against Muskegon, the Capitols will face off against the USNTDP U-18's on Saturday.

Madison returns home on Wednesday, March 6th, to start a five-game home stand. The Caps will face off against the Gamblers on that Wednesday night before hosting Sioux Falls for a pair on Friday and Saturday. Tickets for all three contests can be found at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
