Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - Tuesday night at McCormick Field was the start of a 12-game homestand in 13 days for the Asheville Tourists. The first of those 12 games went the way of the home team courtesy of a 7-5 victory over the Greenville Drive. The game was close the entire way but the Tourists made enough plays to earn the win.
Asheville claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to some crafty base-running by Scott Schreiber. After drawing a walk, Schreiber stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by Greenville's catcher. The centerfielder picked up the ball and attempted to throw out Schrieber at third but the ball carried into the Drive dugout, allowing Schreiber to score.
The visitors took the lead in the third inning thanks to a pair of solo Home Runs. Asheville bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the third to go back on top 4-2. Enmanuel Valdez hit an RBI double and the Tourists plated two on wild pitches.
After Greenville tied the game in the top of the fourth, A.J. Lee put Asheville in front for good with a solo Home Run to right in the bottom of the frame. The Tourists tacked on two more in the sixth thanks to a lead-off double by Colin Barber and a pair of sacrifice flies by Luis Santana and Alex McKenna. Barber made a sensational, run-saving catch to end the top of the sixth.
Asheville's pitching combination of Chandler Casey, Felipe Tejada, Danny Cody, and Devin Conn proved to be enough against a potent Greenville lineup. Tejada and Conn combined to pitch 2.2 perfect innings with five strikeouts.
The homestand continues on Wednesday evening with game two between the Tourists and the Drive scheduled for 6:35pm.
