Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Suns starter Glenn Bott walked a career-high seven batters, but pitched five shutout innings, earning his first win in more than two months in a 2-0 victory over the Mobile BayBears in front of 9,140 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Bott (4-9) had not won since June 11, but wriggled out of two bases-loaded jams and allowed one hit. The BayBears (65-59 overall, 25-29 second half) stranded 11 baserunners despite collecting four hits against Suns hurlers.

The Suns (56-66, 21-32) snapped a five-game losing streak and avoided losing 11 of 12 games for the first time in 10 years. Willy Aybar smashed a deep home run to right field, a solo shot in the fourth inning off BayBears starter Brian Whitaker, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead. Joel Guzman singled home Shane Victorino, who earlier tripled, with two outs in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Whitaker (7-8) pitched six innings, walked none and struck out four in the defeat. BayBears shortstop Ronnie Merrill led all batters with two hits.

SUNS SPOTS: Guzman extended his hitting streak to eight games. …Bott has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 17 of 25 starts, but the win Saturday was his third as a starting pitcher. …Manager Dino Ebel is one win shy of becoming the fifth Suns skipper to 200 Southern League wins. …The Suns have won 37 home games, two more than their 2003 total.

ON DECK: Right-hander T.J. Nall (6-9, 3.89 ERA) is scheduled to face BayBears righty Gabe Ribas (2-5, 6.07) at 5:05 p.m. Sunday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in the second game of a four-game series.
