Worcester Tornadoes News Release
So far this season, when Righty Dan Sausville has started on the bump for the Tornadoes after a team loss, he has come through with a win. Friday was a different story.
Sausville gave up eight earned runs to the Rockland Boulders, along with two homeruns. However, he did a great service for Chip Plante's bullpen by going six innings for the Tornadoes, striking out two. Sausville collected his first loss of the season; as the Tornadoes went on to lose 12-2.
His counterpart, Bobby Blevins, was almost perfect on the other side. Of the nine innings he pitched, seven of them he retired the side in order, a tough line for any starting pitcher to match. In his complete game, Blevins gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out nine Tornadoes hitters.
The Boulders got rolling in a hurry, with Keith Brachold swatting a line drive over the center field wall for a two run homer, scoring Qualon Millender. Brachold added an RBI single in the third inning, scoring Jonathan Smith and Chris Valencia.
Smith blew the game open with a three run home run off the scoreboard in right center field, allowing Cole Kraft and Matt Nandin to score after they had back-to-back singles.
However, the Tornadoes were able to respond, when Jose Canseco bombed his first Tornadoes home run over the wall in right-centerfield. His two run dinger allowed Jerod Edmondson to score after Edmondson singled on a line drive to left field, his 18th consecutive game reaching base.
The Boulders responded quickly with an RBI double from Orlando Mercado, which scored Ryan Mollica after he hit a one out single.
Mike Mullen came in to relieve Sausville in the seventh inning, throwing eight pitches (seven strikes). He lowered his 2012 ERA from 1.59 to 1.35 with his scoreless inning.
Chip Plante then turned to his back-up catcher, Chris Torres, to finish out the game. Torres gave up four runs on two innings, one of them coming on Ryan Mollica's fourth home run of the season.
The Tornadoes fell to 7-11 on the season, as the Rockland Boulders inched closer to a .500 winning percentage, improving to 9-11.
