Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Maine - Led by three home runs, the Sanford Mainers put across 10 runs for the second straight night as they shutout Keene 10-0 on Saturday evening.
Heading into Saturday's divisional matchup against the SwampBats, Goodall Park had only seen one home run this season by the team that calls it home, but in the first inning Nick Roselli (Binghamton) doubled that total.
It wasn't Roselli's home run that got the offense started but rather Kevin Skagerlind's (UMass Amherst) leadoff walk. Skagerlind stole second base and was brought around to score just two batters later when Devan Bade (Binghamton) singled up the middle.
Bade's RBI single, which was his second in as many days, was followed by a Logan Poteet (Vanderbilt) walk. With three of the first four hitters reaching base, Aidan Corn (Pasco Hernando) needed an out with Roselli stepping to the plate.
Roselli, who has proven to be a tough out as of late reaching base eight times in his previous three games, launched his second home run of the season. By the time Roselli touched home plate after the 392-foot blast, the Mainers were ahead 4-0 in the first frame of action.
With a new 4-0 lead, in which all runs came across by way of his college teammates, Ryan Dee (Binghamton) had to work around two errors that put a runner, Jordan Smith (George Mason), at third base. Dee did just that as he got Bryan Padilla (UConn) to pop out to Roselli at second.
After going scoreless in the second inning, which was the first inning for Thomas Sullivan (Franklin Pierce) out of the bullpen, the Moose got their bats going again in the third.
A leadoff single by Poteet and a walk by Roselli put two runners on base for Matt Polk (Vanderbilt). Polk doubled down the right field line, which drove in his Commodores teammate for the fifth run of the game.
An at-bat later with Jeremiah Jenkins (Maine) at the plate, Roselli scored on a passed ball that also allowed Polk to get to third base. Polk scored when Jenkins sent a ball to deep left field, which did not clear the wall, but was deep enough for a sacrifice fly.
Sanford kept the every other inning trend alive as it went scoreless in the fourth before putting another multi-run inning together in the fifth.
Poteet looked to be stranded on first base after his second single of the contest, which boosted his season batting average to .309, was followed by two flyouts by Roselli and Polk.
After Polk's flyout Shaun McKenna pulled Sullivan in favor of Samuel Drumheller (Florida Atlantic).
Drumheller served up a home run out of the bullpen to the first hitter he saw in Jenkins. That was the fourth home run of the season for the American East Player of the Year, and it gave the Mainers a 9-0 lead.
With a 9-0 lead in his favor, Nic Lops turned the ball over to his bullpen after Dee went five-shutout innings and allowed just five hits and struck out one in the process.
Dee was followed by Connor Caverly (Springfield), Chris Gallagher (Wright State), Michael Simes (UMass Lowell) and Ryan Scott (Maine). Those four arms each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen with Simes and Scott working their way around runners in scoring position.
In the seventh inning, which belonged to Gallagher on the hill, Eddie Eisert (Virginia Tech) took the first pitch he saw as a pinch hitter out of the ballpark. Eisert's second home run of the summer was the third and final of the day for the Mainers and their fourth at Goodall the season.
Sanford is scheduled to play at Bristol tomorrow with Justin Honeycutt (UNC Asheville) getting the ball.
