NECBL Announces 2023 All-Star Game Managers & Coaching Staffs
July 15, 2023 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
NORTH ADAMS, MA - The coaching staffs of the Newport Gulls, led by manager Frank Holbrook, and the Vermont Mountaineers, led by manager Mitchell Holmes, will lead the East and West teams, respectively, at the 2023 NECBL All-Star Game, presented by Metro Credit Union.
The coaching staffs for the annual showcase event of the league are determined by the teams with the best records at the conclusion of games on Friday, July 14th. The Newport Gulls have the best record in the league at 23-8, and they lead the Coastal Division, who will make up the East All-Star team, with the addition of the Sanford Mainers.
The West All-Star team will consist of the remaining teams in the North Division, which Vermont leads with a record of 18-11-1, and the four teams from the West Division, currently led by the Valley Blue Sox (16-14-1).
Holbrook has been in the Gulls organization since his college days, pitching for them in 2012, finishing 3-0 with 23 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work. The Gulls would go on to win their fifth NECBL title in 2012. He then returned in 2013 as an assistant manager, where the Gulls reached the NECBL finals again, falling short of back-to-back titles.
He then was hired by Wheaton College, his alma mater, where he served as an assistant coach from 2014-2018, before leaving to accept a head coach position at Rhode Island College for the 2019 season. In the first year at RIC, his team broke the program record for wins, going 26-16, following that in 2021 with a 23-11 record.
Holbrook's Gulls have an NECBL leading 23-8 record, leading the Coastal Division by three and a half games over the Mystic Schooners. The Gulls lead the league in both ERA (2.37) and batting average (.253).
Holmes is making his second consecutive appearance as an All-Star Game manager. He currently has his Mountaineers' sitting at 18-11-1, two and a half games ahead of the Upper Valley Nighthawks in the North Division, with his team hitting .243 and pitching to a 3.70 ERA. Holmes is currently in his second season as manager, after serving as hitting coach under Charlie Barbieri in 2021.
Holmes led the Mountaineers to a 32-12 record in his first season, tying the 2022 Bristol Blues and the 2006 Newport Gulls for the NECBL's best record.
Holmes currently is an assistant coach for the College of the Holy Cross, after previously working for Wofford College as the Director of Player Development.
The 2023 NECBL All-Star Game will be at the historic Fraser Field, home of the North Shore Navigators, on Sunday, July 23rd. For more information and to buy tickets, click here.
