Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO - For the second time in franchise history, the Chicago Red Stars will host a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Semifinal Matchup, which will mark their fifth consecutive playoff match. The game is scheduled to take place on October 20th at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, IL.
Chicago earned the right to host the match thanks to a stellar regular season where they finished second in the NWSL standings with 44 points. The Red Stars head into postseason play on a team record five-game winning streak that saw them finish September with a perfect record.
The Red Stars roster features a multitude of talent. Captain Julie Ertz, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, defender Tierna Davidson, and midfielder Morgan Brian played key roles for the United States Women's National Team during this summer's FIFA World Cup. Ertz's performances earned her a spot in the first-ever FIFPro Women's World XI, while Naeher was the hero during the World Cup semifinal with her penalty-kick save that sent the U.S. WNT to the World Cup Final.
Chicago also features the league's most prolific goalscorer in Australian forward Sam Kerr. Kerr finished the NWSL season with 18 goals, smashing the previous record for most goals in a season she set herself back in 2017. She has been named NWSL Player of the Week on a record six occasions this season. With one regular-season matchday remaining, she is the favorite to win the league's Golden Boot for an unprecedented third consecutive year.
Kerr has created a flourishing partnership with former Japanese international Yuki Nagasato. The 2011 World Cup champion is enjoying her best season she has had since joining Chicago back in 2017. She currently leads the league with eight assists and her eight goals are a career-high during her time in the NWSL.
Defensively, Casey Short is flourishing on the outside and creating one of her best seasons to date. Short is the only player in the NWSL on every edition of the league's Team of the Month Squad so far while playing in 23 games this season. She has also contributed a huge role offensively with three assists and two goals, the final one coming in stoppage-time two weeks ago to give Chicago a crucial win in the playoff hunt.
The process to apply for press credentials for the NWSL semifinal match in Chicago will open on Monday, October 7. Additional information will be followed up on the application open date.
Tickets for Chicago's semifinal matchup will go on sale on Monday, September 30 at 11 am C.T.
