Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA- For the second straight night the Kane County Cougars shutout the Clinton LumberKings, 4-0, to spoil the home opener at Ashford University Field. Kane County (0-1) registered ten hits against LumberKings pitching with three Cougars having multi-hit nights.
Brandon Miller started for Clinton and was sharp through his first four innings, not allowing a run and striking out six batters. In the top of the second, Miller (0-1) struck out the side in order and needed just ten pitches to get through the inning. In the fourth, Miller again struck out the side to work around a Ramon Hernandez one-out single. Miller did not run into trouble until his final inning, the fifth. After retiring the first man of the frame, the righty allowed the next five Cougars to reach. Luis Liberato had one of the plays of the night in the inning. Anfernee Grier singled to center with Alexis Olmeda on second and when Olmeda tried to score on the play Liberato threw a perfect strike to catcher Nick Thurman for the second out of the inning. Miller could not escape the inning however. The next batter, Marcus Wilson, tripled home two runs to break the scoreless tie. The next pitch to Jazz Chisholm platted home the third run of the inning and gave the Cougars a 3-0 win. The LumberKings offense again struggled to string hits together off Cougars pitching. Clinton did not have one inning in which they collected two. All five of the LumberKings hits went for singles with Bryson Brigman becoming the first LumberKing of the season to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Liberato also had a nice night at the plate despite not collecting a hit. The LumberKings centerfielder went 0-for-1 but worked three walks off three different Cougars pitchers. Kane County's starter Sam McWilliams (1-0) was stingy during his five innings of work, he allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out five to earn his first win of the season. Ryan Burr made his second appearance of the series for Kane County and recorded the final two outs to earn his first save of the season. Kane County added an insurance run in the seventh inning without recording a hit. Two walks by Kyle Wilcox and three wild pitches in the inning led to a 4-0 lead for Kane County and ended the night for Wilcox. The LumberKings have now dropped 10 straight home openers, last winning the home curtain raiser in 2007. Clinton will now wrap up their series with the Cougars with a Sunday matinee. RHP Tim Viehoff (0-0, 0.00) will get the start for the LumberKings and face Kane County's LHP Cody Reed (0-0, 0.00).
